Type 32 (Otsu) for a transport soldier


乙=輜重兵用　刀身: 陸軍刀剣鋼、(刃長 77.4㎝、反り: 1.35㎝)、機械鍛造・研磨、油焼入れ、樋(ひ)付き・刃紋無し
東京砲兵工廠製造　(全長 93.0㎝)　

Type 32 (Otsu) for a transport soldier Blade: sword steel of the army standard. (Blade length: 77.4㎝,
Curvature: 1.35㎝). Machine made and tempering in oils. With a fuller(Hi) and no Hamon. Iron scabbard.
A backstrap, a guard, and a scabbard are chromium plating. Overall length: 93.0㎝.
Made in the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal




「甲」との相違は刃長が.6.2㎝短く、護拳の指貫が無い。
Compared with "Ko", the blade length of Otsu is short 6.2cm. Otsu does not have a leather thimble of a guard.

柄・護拳・駐爪・刀身後部・口金の形状
The shape of a hilt, a spring-clip, a guard, the blade rear, and a throat.




口金の形状と駐爪受けのテーパー。
The shape of the throat, and the taper of the spring-clip holder.



刀身後端の状況。縦の鑢目の処は刀身表面から落ち込んだ段差が付く。ハバキ該当部(Ricasso)のこちら側に検査官名が打刻されたものもある。(例: 陸自大村駐屯地所蔵品には「出」の刻印がある)
The situation of the ricasso(backend of the blade). The place of vertical file marks has the level difference which fell from the blade surface. There are some which stamped the inspector name on a ricasso of the side here.



茎ボルト用蟹目ナットの状況。ナットの頭部は背金終端曲面 と完全に一体化している。その為に、注意深く見ないとナットの存在に気がつかない。中央の�\く見える丸は茎ボルトの終端。

The situation of the crab's eyes-shaped nut for swod-tang bolts. The head harmonizes with a backstrap-end curved surface completely. One will not notice a nut existence, if it does not see carefully. A central black circle is a backend of a swod-tang bolt.



刀身と蹄鉄型石突の製造シリアル№ 106595 　蹄鉄型石突の形状は製作会社と年代で微妙に異なる。
Serial number of a shoe-shaped chape and blade: Serial number 106595. A shape is delicately different in a production company.


終戦迄は右読みが原則。右下の文字の偏(へん)は「木」の篆(てん)文体、傍(つくり)は「酋(おさ)」、即ち「楢(なら)」である。
何故偏のみ篆文体かは不明。
大正4年2月、楢平(ならへい又はならひら)の検査官名。
中央の砲兵工廠標章は上と右下の砲弾マークが掠(かす)れている。

The upper character is in February 1915.
A lower character is "Narahira". Probably, this character is an inspector's name.

　第五八　輜重兵刀各部ノ名稱ハ附表第四ノ如シ　輜重兵刀ノ構造ハ大略

三十二年式軍刀ニ等シキモ護拳ノ形状大ナルヲ異ナレリトス



※輜重兵科では三十二年式軍刀「乙」ではなく「輜重兵刀」と規定している。

三十二年式は一般に「騎兵刀」と認識されていた為であろう。

騎兵用に比べて「護拳が大きい」とその特徴を挙げている。

革の指貫が付いているのは「甲」図を引用した為か ?


又、第7章第62項に「徒歩刀」の規定があるが、「徒歩刀ノ構造ハ大略三十年式歩兵銃々劔ニ等シキモ刀身ハ尖頭に至リ兩刃ヲ附シ鞘ハ牛革ヲ以テ作リ之ニ黄銅製ノ鯉口、鐺を附シ且柄モ黄銅製ナルヲ異ナレリトス」とあり、兵種に依って刀剣の種類が多岐に亘っている事が解る。



※2 この図から、前ページ掲載の口金形状が確認される。三十二年式は長期間製造され、何度も中改正を繰り返した。

　従って、口金の相違は兵科に依るものでは無く、製造年代の違いと推測する。大正11年10月14日には、「鐺」が中改正された。

　大正4年製（陸自・大村駐屯地所蔵他）の口金と、軍刀外装は年代が古い程丁寧な造りである事を勘案すると、この口金形状は大正11年1月16日の中改正以降の物ではなかろうか。三十二年式の外装にはかなりのバリエーションが存在した。



The figure of this Type 32 Gunto is published by the transport soldier's textbook. ※2 From this figure, this throat shape of the last page Mr. G Vanduyfhuys possession is checked. The Type 32 Gunto was manufactured for a long period of time, and it was revised repeatedly in the meantime. There was revision in a "Chape " in 1922 (October 14, Taisho 11).

Therefore, change of metal fittings conjectures the difference which is not a difference which depends on arming and depends on a manufacture age. If the throat of the page of the front made from Taisho 4 is taken into consideration, isn't this throat type a thing after the revision in 1922 (January 16, Taisho 11)?

A variation with a remarkable mounting of a Type 32 Gunto exists.
